Generally speaking there are two types of banks: retail banks, normally known as clearing banks, and investment or merchant banks. Clearing banks are high street branches and Internet banks. They provide banking services primarily to individual customers. Investment banks provide international banking, investment management, and corporate finance advice for companies, institutions and governments. The qualifications needed to work for a clearing bank range from GCSEs to degrees. Investment banks look mainly for exceptional graduates of any discipline who can show evidence of a variety of skills and sound analytical ability. What job could I do?

Clearing banks
Bank Officer/Clerk - this role involves working on the counter, face-to-face with the customer, dealing with account transactions and enquiries. The next step up is dealing with foreign exchange or becoming an insurance or mortgage adviser

Bank Manager - this role includes responsibility for managing and training the staff of the bank and also dealing with more complex customer enquiries - such as requests for loans

Corporate Managers - corporate managers operate at regional or head offices advising on taxation, investment and corporate banking to large companies.

Investment Banks
Corporate Finance - this role involves advising companies on acquisitions and mergers or helping to raise money for the company

Investment Management - also known as asset or fund management, this role involves managing investments on behalf of pension funds, banks, charities etc

Capital Markets - managing the banks own assets through dealing in the world's money markets, taking advantage of variations in interest rates etc

Operations - the support teams who focus on processing and supporting customer services, often facilitating new systems to improve services

Careers in Hampshire Earning potential?

The salary for a clerk in a clearing bank increases with experience. Graduate trainees heading for management roles can start at between £15,000 and £25,000. The potential rewards in investment banking are substantial. Graduates start with earnings of £25,000 to £29,000 and annual bonuses can increase yearly pay by 50 per cent or more.
